Seminar was held November 16, 2000, at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey California. Next series planned for fiscal year 2003.
"While all engineering products and processes need to have reliability designed into them to minimize or mitigate failure, the very nature of some products and processes necessitate that reliability engineering in the form of reliability prediction and reliability analysis be integral to the design process at all levels." A 45 minute discussion of how to organize an effective Reliability Program, that includes such tasks as, Prediction, FMEA, Fault Tree, Failure Review Board, and Failure Reporting and Corrective Action System, and Root Cause Analysis. Also, a brief slide presentation defining the term MTBF, what it is and how it's calculated.

Design analysis methods consist of:
MTBF, MTTR Modeling and Predictions per MIL, Bellcore, NASA, SAE standards. Provides management with systems reliability modeling for effective MTBF calculations, to ensure compliance to Bellcore Reliability Program specifications.
FMEA/FMECA - Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (w/criticality) provides engineering managers with a bottoms-up look at electronic and mechanical systems, early-on in the project life cycle. It pin points potential problems before they become major cost drivers to the project.
Worst Case Performance Analysis - Provides management with timely reports of electronic systems performance through analysis and simulation techniques using Computer Aided Engineering. Digital timing diagrams are generated to check for races/glitches and determines fan-out compliance. In Analog circuits, it derives transistor and op-amp circuit equations, verifying stability, performance and adequate leakage compensation under worst case operating conditions.
Systems Effectiveness Analysis - is the probability that the system can successfully meet an operational demand within a given time when operated under specified conditions. To accomplish this, the following systems design factors are analyzed:
Software Reliability uses deterministic or probabilistic approaches to predict the software MTTF and provides management with a report of cumulative number of errors, cumulative test time, program error detection rates (failure rate), error correction rate, cumulative time to repair (repair rate), and the system MTTR (Mean Time To Repair).
Creating a Failure Reporting System (FRACAS) that is a closed loop reporting system for management and engineering to take appropriate actions for Cost Of Ownership improvement through warranty cost reduction and customer satisfaction.
Fault Detection Isolation Analysis, as part of Maintainability Analysis, analyzes system capabilities in the areas of Built In Test software and Built In Test Equipment such as alarms, warning lights and system status reports.
Risk Assessment and Hazard Analysis per MIL 882, using Fault Tree Analysis, results in reporting design anomalies that may be safety hazards to operating personnel or the environment.
